Hear the story of George Moses Horton, a man who was a former slave and the first African American to be published in the South. Writer and storyteller Audrey Turner of the Writer's Garret will then lead you in the process of writing poetry for a particular audience. What will your audience want to hear about?


Avance Book Club

When: Thursday, February 18, 2016 - 1:00 PM

Book Clubs target low-income parents with young children birth through age three. Parents attend together with their babies, toddlers, and three-year-old children and moms learn how to have fun while reading to their children, participating with their children in the adventure of reading.

Black Education in America

Dr. Kimberly Hill, an African-American history professor from UT Dallas, will give a talk about historic black education in America and engage in a discussion with the audience.


AARP Tax-Aide

When: Monday, February 22, 2016 - 12:00 PM
Where: Hampton-Illinois Branch Library (in the In Library)

Dallas Public Library will partner with AARP Tax-Aide to offer free, in-person tax assistance through trained volunteers. Assistance is geared toward people with low-to-moderate income, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. People interested in receiving assistance should bring W-2's, last year's tax return, Social Security cards for all dependents, and photo I.D. Space is limited.
