Library Cards

Library cards are free for City of Dallas residents and City of Dallas employees. Students and certified teachers of public elementary and secondary schools located in the City are also eligible to receive free library cards, which include remote access to the library's databases as well as downloadable media from Overdrive.

Databases are accessible at all of our locations with or without a library card.

How to get a library card

Adults

  • To apply for a library card, you will need to visit any library location with
    • A current government-issued photo ID
    • Proof of Dallas residency, such as a current driver's license, lease agreement, or utility bill
  • You may begin the application process online. Applying online will grant certain immediate privileges, but you will still need to visit the library to receive your card.

Children and Teenagers

  • Children may visit the library with a guardian to obtain a library card. The guardian must have a current photo ID and proof of Dallas residency or the child's school registration and/or ID (valid for schools within the City of Dallas only). The child does not need to be present if the guardian has the child's school registration, birth certificate, or other means of identification.
  • Teenagers may apply for their own library card with a current Dallas school ID or government ID.

How to update your library card

To update a telephone number, email address, or minor spelling changes please call your local branch or our Central circulation department at 214-670-1740. Additionally, you may email us at librarycustomerservice@dallaslibrary.org. Please include your library card number with your email.

To update address information and/or a name change, please visit one of our locations with proof of the change.

How to renew your library card

All Dallas Public Library cards, including non-resident, education, volunteer, and company cards, are valid for one year, after which time they must be renewed.

Library cards can be renewed in person at any library with photo identification showing a current city of Dallas address. If your photo identification does not have your current address, you will need to provide address verification in addition to the photo id. Acceptable forms of address verification include, but are not limited to, the following: lease agreement, vehicle insurance, current utility bill or other business mail.

If you are unable to renew your card in person, we can accept a scanned image of your current driver's license; if your license does not have your current Dallas address, please include a current utility bill or other business mail that has your current Dallas address. You can submit the scan directly to librarycustomerservice@dallaslibrary.org

Cards for non-City of Dallas residents

City of Addison residents may obtain a Dallas Public Library card by visiting Addison Town Hall. These cards allow Addison residents to check out materials, however they do not include access to downloadable media from Overdrive or remote access to library databases.

Texas residents may be eligible for a TexShare card from their local lending library. The TexShare card will allow residents from other cities to check out up to five Dallas Public Library items at a time but does not include Dallas Public Library database access. Certain restrictions apply; check with your local library or visit the TexShare site for more details.

City of Dallas employees as well as students and certified teachers of public elementary and secondary schools located in the City are eligible to receive free library cards. Proof of employment or school ID is necessary.

Fee cards, which allow non-residents to check out materials, are also available for purchase at every location. Fee cards start at $25 for five items. An annual fee card, which allows unlimited check out, is $250. Please note that this card does not allow access to downloadable media from Overdrive or remote access to the library's databases.

Company cards are available to businesses located within the City of Dallas. The request must be submitted on company letterhead (including street address and phone number). State the number of cards desired and name of staff (not to exceed 2) to be using the cards. The letter must be signed by a chief executive officer agreeing to be responsible for any delinquencies that may occur.

Company cards are for business-related materials, not for personal use. The company is responsible for keeping track of the personnel using these cards. If the company has 2 cards issued and one is lost, all cards will need to be replaced if the specific card number is not known. If this occurs, the company will be responsible for reporting the card lost/stolen: report the card at 214-670-1740.

Library card fines and fees

  • Overdue materials
    • Books and magazines: $.30 per day; $12.50 cost-of-material maximum
    • DVDs/VHS, CDs, and special reference loans: $1.00 per day; $20 maximum
    • Lost or damaged items: $28 reprocessing fee plus the cost of the material
  • Replacement cards: $4
  • Forgotten card: $1 (with valid photo ID)

Delinquent accounts of $35 or more may be referred to a third party collection agency; an additional $20 collection fee will be added to referred accounts.
