DPL Guide: Placing a request for a particlar volume

To request a basic hold: click here

The best way to control which disc of a TV series you receive when requesting material from the library is to place an item specific request. Unlike a regular request, which tells the catalog system to send any item associated with a title, an item specific request tells the system exactly which disc to send. However, note that requesting a specific item may take longer to reach you as the catalog system will not be able to fill your request until that specific item is available.

Customers also have the option to call their local branch and have library staff place the request for them if they wish.

To begin the process, open your web browser and navigate to http://catalog.dallaslibrary.org; next search for a TV series title that you're interested in checking out.

Click on the availability button to display the list of items owned by the Dallas Public Library.

Once you are able to view the list of items, select the volume that you're interested in. For this example we've select volume 1 of the Sopranos Season 3, selecting also the disc located at the Bachman Lake Branch. To select that item, click on the icon to the left of the item entry "F v. 1" (circled in the image below).

It is necessary to log in to the online catalog in order to place holds. If you are not logged in when you click "Place Request", the system will prompt you to login before proceeding with the hold request.

After successfully logging in, the catalog asks whether you wouldd like to send the item to your default library or another library.

NOTE: If you want to change your default branch, please contact your local library branch or e-mail librarycustomerservice@dallaslibrary.org and request a more convenient branch.

Finally the catalog will ask if you want "This item only" or the "First Available". To request this specific disc, you must select "This item only."

Selecting "First Available" will tell the system to select whichever volume under this title can be delivered soonest. Unfortunately this could mean that you would not receive the desired volume of a DVD set, and would need to start a new request.

When you select "This item only," the hold is placed and you may either return to your previous search page or view the requests for your account.
